How it works
Enter three dimensions, each in whatever unit is handy, and get the volume in cubic yards. Bulk materials like soil, mulch, gravel and concrete are all sold by the cubic yard in the US.
Mixing units is the most common mistake in these estimates: a 10 × 10 ft area 6 inches deep is 50 cubic feet (1.85 yards), not 600. The unit selectors convert everything to feet first, so you can enter depth in inches directly.
No waste is added here. Use the material-specific calculators for weight, bag counts and recommended extra.
Formula
Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27. One cubic yard = 27 cu ft = 0.7646 m³.
Questions people ask
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
Twenty-seven: a yard is 3 feet, so a cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 feet.
How do I convert square feet to cubic yards?
Multiply the square feet by the depth in feet (inches ÷ 12), then divide by 27. For example, 300 sq ft at 4 inches deep is 300 × 0.333 ÷ 27 = 3.7 cubic yards.
How many cubic meters is a cubic yard?
About 0.7646 cubic meters. One cubic meter is about 1.308 cubic yards.
