How it works
Long division breaks a big division into small steps. Work left to right: bring down the next digit, see how many times the divisor fits, multiply, subtract, and carry the difference to the next step.
Each row in the steps table shows one cycle. The last subtraction leaves the remainder: the part that is too small to divide again. The answer is also given as a mixed number and a decimal.
Formula
dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder, where 0 ≤ remainder < divisor
Questions people ask
How do I check a long division answer?
Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get the dividend back: 176 × 7 + 2 = 1,234.
How do I turn a remainder into a decimal?
Keep dividing: add a decimal point and zeros to the dividend and continue bringing down 0s. Or simply divide the remainder by the divisor and add it on.
Can the remainder be larger than the divisor?
No. If it is, the divisor fits at least once more, so the quotient digit in that step was too small.
