How it works
Distance from steps depends on your stride length. A common estimate for walking is about 41.5% of height for men and 41.3% for women, giving roughly 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile for most adults.
For a more accurate number, measure your own stride: walk a known distance such as 20 steps on a track or measured hallway, then divide the distance by the step count and enter it above.
Running strides are much longer than walking strides, so use a measured running stride for runs. Results are estimates, not medical advice.
Formula
Distance = steps × stride length; estimated stride = height × 0.415 (men) or 0.413 (women)
Questions people ask
How many steps are in a mile?
About 2,000 to 2,500 for most adults when walking. Taller people with longer strides take fewer steps; at a 2.5 ft stride it is 2,112 steps.
How far is 10,000 steps?
Roughly 4 to 5 miles (6.5 to 8 km) for most adults, depending on height and stride.
How do I measure my stride length?
Walk normally over a measured distance, count your steps, and divide the distance by the number of steps. Repeat a few times and average the result.
