How it works
Volume is the amount of space a solid takes up, measured in cubic units. Choose a shape and enter its dimensions in one unit.
Prisms and cylinders are base area × height. Cones and pyramids are exactly one-third of the matching cylinder or prism. A capsule is a cylinder with a hemisphere on each end, so its length here is the straight section only.
With real units selected, the volume is also given in liters, US gallons, cubic feet and cubic meters: handy for tanks, planters and containers.
Formula
Box lwh · Cylinder πr²h · Sphere (4/3)πr³ · Cone (1/3)πr²h · Pyramid (1/3)lwh · Capsule πr²L + (4/3)πr³
Questions people ask
How many gallons does a cylindrical tank hold?
Find the volume in cubic inches (πr²h) and divide by 231, since one US gallon is 231 in³. A tank 24 in across and 36 in tall holds about 70.5 gallons.
Why is a cone one-third of a cylinder?
It can be proven with calculus or by experiment: three cones of water exactly fill a cylinder with the same base and height.
How do I convert cubic feet to gallons?
Multiply by about 7.48. One cubic foot is 7.48052 US gallons, or 28.317 liters.
