How it works
Convert a length or distance between metric units (millimeters to kilometers), US customary units (inches, feet, yards, miles), nautical miles and astronomical distances. The table below the result shows the same length in every unit at once.
All conversions use exact definitions. Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, one inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, so one foot is exactly 0.3048 meters and one mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters.
Formula
Result = value × (meters per from-unit) ÷ (meters per to-unit). 1 in = 0.0254 m exactly.
Questions people ask
How many centimeters are in an inch?
Exactly 2.54 centimeters. To convert inches to centimeters multiply by 2.54; to go the other way divide by 2.54.

A statute mile is 5,280 feet (1,609.344 m). A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 m, about 1.15078 statute miles, and is used in air and sea navigation because it is close to one minute of latitude.
What is the US survey foot?
An older unit equal to 1200/3937 m, about 2 parts per million longer than the international foot. It was retired for new work at the end of 2022; this converter uses the international foot.
