How it works

Enter the bill, the tip percentage and how many people are sharing. The calculator shows the tip, the total and what each person owes.

Turn on rounding to round each share up to the next whole dollar. The extra goes to the tip, and the effective tip rate is shown so you can see what you actually left.

Many people tip on the pre-tax amount. If you want to do that, enter the subtotal before tax as the bill and add the tax back in when you pay.

Formula

Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100; per person = (bill + tip) ÷ people

Questions people ask

How much should I tip at a restaurant in the US?

For table service, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual range, with 18% to 20% common in cities. Counter service and takeout tips are optional and often smaller.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Etiquette guides generally say the pre-tax amount is fine. Tipping on the after-tax total gives a slightly larger tip; the difference is small either way.

What does rounding up do?

Each person’s share is rounded up to the next dollar, so no one needs coins. The tip grows by the rounding amount.
