How it works
Enter the original price and the discount. If a store offers an extra percentage off sale items, enter it as the second discount; it is applied to the already-reduced price.
Stacked discounts are smaller than they look. 25% off and then another 10% off is 32.5% off in total, not 35%, because the second discount applies to a smaller number.
A dollar-off coupon is subtracted after the percentage discounts. Add your sales tax rate to see the final checkout price.
Formula
Sale price = price × (1 − d1) × (1 − d2) − coupon
Questions people ask
Is 20% off plus 20% off the same as 40% off?
No. It is 36% off: 0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64 of the original price.
Does the order of two percentage discounts matter?
No. Multiplication works in any order, so 10% then 25% gives the same result as 25% then 10%. A dollar-off coupon does change the result depending on whether it is applied before or after the percentages.
How do I find the percent off from two prices?
Divide the amount saved by the original price and multiply by 100. A $80 item on sale for $60 is 20 ÷ 80 = 25% off.
