How it works
Speed, distance and time are linked by one relation: distance equals speed multiplied by time. Know any two and you can find the third.
The speed here is an average speed over the whole trip. Stops, traffic and hills change your instantaneous speed but not the average, which is total distance divided by total time.
Pace (time per mile or kilometer) is the reciprocal of speed and is what runners and walkers usually track.
Formula
d = s × t s = d ÷ t t = d ÷ s
Questions people ask
How long does it take to drive 300 miles at 65 mph?
300 ÷ 65 = 4.62 hours, or about 4 hours 37 minutes of driving time, before stops.
Why is my average speed lower than my cruising speed?
Average speed includes slow sections and stops. Driving 60 mph for one hour and 30 mph for one hour averages 45 mph over 90 miles, not the speed you held most of the time.
How do I convert mph to km/h?
Multiply by 1.609344. 60 mph is 96.56 km/h. To go the other way, divide by 1.609344.
