How it works
Baking by weight is more accurate than baking by volume, because a cup of flour can weigh anywhere from about 110 to 150 grams depending on how it is filled. This converter turns US cups, tablespoons, teaspoons and milliliters into grams, ounces or pounds (and back) for common ingredients.
Each ingredient uses a typical weight per US cup (236.6 mL), based on standard references such as USDA food data and common baking tables. Flour values assume the spoon-and-level method; brown sugar assumes firmly packed.
You can also convert volume to volume or weight to weight; those conversions are exact and do not depend on the ingredient.
Formula
Grams = volume (mL) × ingredient density (g/mL), where density = grams per cup ÷ 236.588
Questions people ask
How many grams is a cup of flour?
About 125 g for all-purpose flour that is spooned into the cup and leveled. Scooping directly from the bag packs it down and can give 140–150 g.
How many grams is a cup of sugar?
About 200 g of granulated sugar. Packed brown sugar is about 220 g and powdered sugar about 120 g.
How much does a stick of butter weigh?
A US stick of butter is 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) and weighs 113 g, or 4 oz.
Are US and metric cups the same?
No. A US cup is 236.6 mL, while a metric cup (Australia, Canada, New Zealand) is 250 mL, about 6% larger. This converter uses US cups.
