How it works
Convert density, the mass per unit volume of a material, between metric and US units. Water at about 4 °C has a density of 1,000 kg/m³, which is 1 g/cm³, 62.43 lb/ft³ or 8.345 lb per US gallon.
Specific gravity is density relative to water, so a material's specific gravity equals its density in g/cm³ (or kg/L). Densities of liquids and gases change with temperature and pressure, so measured values usually state the conditions.
Formula
Result = value × (kg/m³ per from-unit) ÷ (kg/m³ per to-unit). 1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³ ≈ 62.428 lb/ft³.
Questions people ask
How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?
Multiply by 1,000. Aluminum at 2.70 g/cm³ is 2,700 kg/m³.
How much does a gallon of water weigh?
About 8.34 pounds per US gallon at room temperature, and about 10.02 pounds per imperial gallon.
Are g/cm³ and g/mL the same?
Yes. A milliliter is exactly one cubic centimeter, so the values are identical.
