How it works
Enter a start and end time to find the elapsed hours and minutes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the period runs past midnight, as with a night shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
You can subtract an unpaid break, and the result is shown both as hours and minutes and as decimal hours, which is the format most payroll systems use.
Formula
Duration = end − start (add 24 hours if end < start) − break
Questions people ask
How do I calculate hours worked overnight?
Subtract the start time from the end time and add 24 hours if the result is negative. For 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM that is 6:30 − 22:00 + 24:00 = 8.5 hours.
What is 7 hours 45 minutes in decimal?
7.75 hours. Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours.
Can this handle durations longer than 24 hours?
No. For spans of more than a day, use the date difference calculator or the time calculator.
